A to Z Reading Survey

If you’re like me, you may have spent your younger years sharing surveys on your Xanga site. As a callback to those times, Jamie at The Perpetual Page Turner created a fun A to Z survey all about books and reading!

AtoZsurvey

Author you’ve read the most books from:

Probably Ann M. Martin, the author of The Babysitter’s Club books. What what!

babysitters
Looking for these pictures kind of made me want to read one of them again, just for the memories!

Best Sequel Ever:

The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis

Currently Reading:

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. Almost finished!

Drink of Choice While Reading:

Water. I’m boring like that. I don’t drink much other than water.

E-reader or Physical Book?

I definitely like having a physical book, but e-readers make things easier, and you can get great deals on the e-books sometimes, so it just depends.

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:

With the disclaimer that the only guy I dated in high school was my husband, and he was the exception to my self-inflicted “no dating in high school because it’s a waste of time right now” rule, there is a small chance I would have given Peeta a shot.

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

The Hunger Games, Cinder, and The Book Thief… I had no idea they would be so good!

Hidden Gem Book:

Finding Alice by Melody Carlson and Anthem by Ayn Rand.

Important Moment in your Reading Life:

Reading The Hunger Games in 2011 reignited my love for reading, my interest in dystopia, and my interest in young adult, all in one swoop. Impressive, Suzanne Collins.

Just Finished:

1984 and Among the Nameless Stars are the books I finished last.

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

Anything erotic.

Longest Book You’ve Read:

Technically, the Bible. Otherwise, probably Crime and Punishment.

Major book hangover because of:

The Hunger Games trilogy

Number of Bookcases You Own:

We have four in the house that actually have books, but we have others used for other storage purposes.

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

Finding Alice.

Preferred Place To Read:

At the beach or by the pool. Or outside in general.

My husband and mine’s beach reads last year. Sadly no beach this year.

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read:

I want to tell him he’s not being fair. That we were strangers. That I did what it took to stay alive, to keep us both alive in that arena. That I can’t explain how things are with Gale because I don’t know myself. That it’s no good loving me because I’m never going to get married anyway and he’d just end up hating me later instead of sooner. That if I do have feelings for him, it doesn’t matter because I’ll never be able to afford the kind of love that leads to a family, to children. And how can he? How can he after what we’ve just been through?
I also want to tell him how much I already miss him. But that wouldn’t be fair on my part.
… Out of the corner of my eye, I see Peeta extend his hand. I look at him, unsure. “One more time?” For the audience?” he says. His voice isn’t angry. It’s hollow, which is worse. Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me.
I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.

From The Hunger Games. Totally killed me when I read it.

Reading Regret:

Not having read Harry Potter when I was younger, and now I still haven’t gotten to the series…

Series You Started And Need To Finish(all books are out in series):

I still want to finish the Left Behind series one day. I should also probably finish the Across the Universe series.

Three of your All-Time Favorite Books:

This is hard… but I’m going to say The Hunger Games, Little Women, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

The Hunger Games

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:

Cress by Marissa Meyer, coming next year!

Worst Bookish Habit:

I judge books by their cover.

X Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book:

Captivating by John and Stasti Eldredge

Your latest book purchase:

Pivot Point by Kasie West; got the e-book for $1.99 (plus taxes).

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late):

I don’t typically stay up too crazy late for books, but I think Catching Fire was the one that kept me the latest.

  1. Haha gooooo baby sitter’s club! I have no idea how many I read when I was a kid. I just stuck with whatever Goodreads told me was the most.

Go The Hunger Games! Glad it helped you fall in love with reading, YA, and dystopias! And gave you the potential boyfriend of Peeta 😉 No reason not to fangirl over it!

And I still can’t believe you haven’t read the HP series. It blows my mind every single time I learn someone hasn’t!

    • I don’t know how many I read, but I had the feeling it was probably 20+ and felt safe assuming that I’ve read more of it than any other author/series.

I know, I know! I just wasn’t interested in it when it came out, and since then I’ve just been so busy reading stuff that doesn’t require quite the commitment length of seven (?) books. I think next year I am going to deem it Harry Potter year…

      • That’s good! I’m cheap so I plan to borrow the e-books from the library, and so how long it takes can widely depend on waiting periods for each book…

  2. Ooh I love posts like these! It always seems hard for me to fill them out myself, though, since my memory isn’t so great. Good thing I have Goodreads shelves to help me out. 😉

I think I may steal this from you and Jamie and fill it out myself. 🙂

I totally fangirled over The Hunger Games as well and I can see it coming up in a few of my A to Z answers.

    • I used to fill out surveys like this all the time, so I couldn’t pass it up when I saw Jamie and other posting it! And yay for more HG fangirling! 🙂

  3. Haha it was fun learning more about you! I think I get your love for The Hunger Games– it was one my favorite series as well 😀 And I think it’s cool and amazing how your husband is the only guy you ever dated in high school! It sounds so romantic XD And please read Harry Potter. It will (probably) be life changing, too. Haha, I dunno, but it was my childhood, so I have some sort of inclination to it. But anyway, great post Amy!

    • Yeah, my husband and I actually never dated anyone else ever, just each other. It may seem like I wouldn’t have known what I wanted enough to stick with only him, but I knew guys well enough to know whether or not they were jerks! My husband’s a catch and I’m thankful I was able to find him early on! We’ve been together for nine years now – five years of dating and four years of marriage.

I know so many people who feel the same way about Harry Potter as you do! I hope I’ll find it revolutionary as well. 🙂

  4. Ohhh man. Yeah. I read a LOT of Babysitters Club books when I was a kid! I didn’t think to include those in my A to Z post (scheduled for next Monday), just because I have no idea how many of them I read. That quote from The Hunger Games is SO GOOD. Great choice there. I’m so glad that series reignited your love for reading! 😀

    • I’m glad too! Reading helps writing and I was struggling with writing but wasn’t reading. I’m glad I’m reading again and taking the time to notice what does and does not work for me in books.

  5. I would have DEFINITELY given Peeta a chance in high school. Or now if my boyfriend doesn’t mind…
I never really got onto The Babysitter’s Club bandwagon when I was younger. I was more into Sweet Valley Kids. But I totally understand your Hunger Games obsession. I blew those books last summer and frequently dreamed of Peeta. Can’t wait for the new movie out in November!

  6. Totally going to do this survey on my blog this week – it’s great! And I like to drink water too when I’m reading – icey cold water is the best. 🙂 Ah I remember reading Babysitter’s Club! I’m afraid to start reading it now to reminisce though in case it really just isn’t the same.
