Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Today’s topic is Top Ten Books I’ve Read So Far This Year. Today’s list will be grouped by how many stars I gave the book, but other than that, this list is not in a particular order. Conveniently, this list includes everything I’ve rated 4-5 stars this year so far, except novellas.
1. Across a Star Swept Sea
“If they didn’t take you seriously, they would never see you coming.”
2. Cress
“I promise, I will not let you die without being kissed.”
“I missed you every hour. And you know what the worst part was? It caught me completely by surprise… And then I’d realize that you weren’t there anymore, and every time, every single time, it was like having the wind knocked out of me. I’ve risked my life for you… So don’t tell me why we don’t belong together.”
4. The 5th Wave
“God doesn’t call the equipped, son. God equips the called. And you have been called.”
5. Code Name Verity
“But I have told the truth. Isn’t that ironic? They sent me because I am so good at telling lies. But I have told the truth.”
“It is on! It is on like Red Dawn!”
7. The Distant Hours
“Write what’s in here because you must, because it pleases you, but never because you want someone else to like what you’ve said.”
8. Steelheart
“You can’t be so frightened of what might happen that you are unwilling to act.”
9. The Scarlet Pimpernel
“God would be merciful. He would not allow so appalling a crime to be committed as the death of a brave man through the hand of a woman who loved him, and worshipped him, and who would gladly have died for his sake.”
10. Parallel
“A person rarely gets just one chance at anything. There are second chances everywhere, if you know where to look for them.”
What are the best books you’ve read so far this year?
I’m planning to read Parallel and Steelheart sometime this year, AND ALSO finish the Lunar Chronicles! I have Cinder on my list, and also Code Name Verity and Shadow and Bone AND Days of Blood and Starlight!
I haven’t read Days of Blood and Starlight, but everything else I enjoyed (obviously!) and hope you do too!
I LOVED Ready Player One. I read that last year and thought it was just great. I really need to read the Lunar Chronicles. I’m also intrigued by Shadow and Bone, in large part because it has a fascinating cover. Great list — here’s mine
The Lunar Chronicles is so good, and Cress has been my favorite thus far! Shadow and Bone was interesting and I plan to read books 2 and 3 back to back sometime after book 3 releases.
I love the quotes being included with each book 🙂
Thanks! I was just going to blab about each book but then I was like… that’s what my reviews are for, so I did the quotes instead! 🙂
I really need to read Code Name Verity, it look so good. Great list.
Here’s my TTT:

It was a bit of a slow start for me, but once I got really into it, it was very good!
Shadow and Bone is on My TTT too! Loved it 🙂 Great list.
It was, and so intriguing! I’m looking forward to diving into the sequels!
Steelheart <3 That would have been on my list for sure, but I read it last year. I've heard that Parallel is amazing, but I really want to read her second book even more.
Parallel is very good. I have some major issues with one character, but other than that, I enjoyed it. Free to Fall sounds good and I just found out I can get the e-book from my library, so I’ll probably be reading that one this year too!
I cannot believe that I did not put Ready Player One on my list – that was such an amazing book!
Missie @ A Flurry of Ponderings
It can be hard to narrow it down if you’ve read a lot!
So many awesome books on your list, Amy! I’m so happy you enjoyed Shadow and Bone — that book is one of my ultimate favorites, almost Harry Potter level. 😀 And it’s also one of the rare books where I approved of the love triangle. I seriously don’t know if I like Mal or the Darkling more… both are so swoony, haha. And I actually read half of The 5th Wave but had to stop because I had exams and too little time, and then never got back into it. I just didn’t find it as epic as so many other people did… but maybe I should give it another try since I never really finished it in the first place.
I’ve been seeing Code Name Verity EVERYWHERE for this TTT! Have you read Rose Under Fire? Personally I enjoyed Rose better than Verity because I found the latter a bit too slow for my liking. But I know I’m in the minority here, so… And YES for Parallel. One of my favorite science fiction stories of all time! The plot was so clever and the romance was — *swoon* The ending was just heartbreaking, though. <3 Too bad there isn't a sequel. 🙁
I am totally Team Mal, but I don’t like bad boys at all. The 5th Wave is a bit of a slow start, but I found it really intriguing psychologically. Code Name Verity was a slow start too; I haven’t read Rose Under Fire yet but I’m sure I will. I thought the end of Parallel was pretty good, what did you find so heartbreaking?
Well, Abby got her life pieced back together, sort of, by choosing Josh instead of the other dude (I can’t remember his name now, lol, but I think it was MIchael? Anyway, it was Josh’s brother), and then another, and then only to have another earthquake and her thrown into another parallel world where Josh doesn’t even remember her — I found that heartbreaking. After everything she went through, this happens again. I don’t know, I was really cheering on the romance and then poof, it vanishes. So while I understand what the author did, I still couldn’t help but feel sad for Abby.
Well, the way I saw it was a chance to start anew with Josh, since she had broken his heart in the other timeline, and that made me so sad for Josh. So I was glad she had the chance to kind of get a do-over in a way. I cared about Abby, but I cared about Josh more, so I was happy that he was going to get to know Abby in a new way and not have to deal with all that heartache! I can see what you mean though.
