The Top Ten Authors I Feel I Should Probably Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Today’s topic is a Freebie, so I decided to go with the top 10 authors I feel I should probably read. Some have specific books I have my eye on, some don’t, but either way, I want to read them eventually! Here are my choices, in no particular order.

1. Sarah Addison Allen, author of Garden Spells

sarah-allen-gardenI’ve heard good things about her fiction and I want to try to read more adult fiction, so she’s someone I think whose work I’ll have to check out.

2. L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne Of Green Gables

I had no idea how much people loved these books until I had been blogging for a while. I knew of them as a kid but I was just never interested in them (like Harry Potter… clearly my younger self didn’t know anything).

3. Ruta Sepetys, author of Between Shades of Gray

ruta-shadesI don’t know why I’m so drawn to read Ruta Sepetys and yet haven’t yet. Too many other books! She was at a writing conference I attended last year, and though I didn’t get to hear much from her she seems really neat. And she lives in Tennessee!

4. Madeleine L’Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time

Again, late to the game here. Actually, the book of hers I’m most interested in reading is called Walking on Water, which Annie quoted multiple times in a blog post and it really piqued my interest!

5. Shannon Hale, author of Austenland

shannon-hale-austenI’ve heard good things about the Princess Academy books, and I love Jane Austen stories, so I think I’m definitely going to have to check out some Shannon Hale sometime.

6. Charlotte Bronte, author of Jane Eyre

I don’t know if I’ll like Bronte or not, but I feel I ought to at least try. After all, her biggest fan, aka Charlene, gave Star Trek a chance. 🙂

7. Susan Dennard, author of Something Strange and Deadly

I love her writing advice and get her weekly emails, so I feel like I should probably read at least one of her books (but hopefully more!).

8. Neil Gaiman, author of Stardust

He’s so prolific, so I feel ought to read something of his for sure!

9. Victoria Schawb, author of A Darker Shade of Magic

schwab-darkershadeI know, I know. I fail at life.

10. Elizabeth Gaskell, author of North and South

I’ve heard some talk about North and South and after reading the synopsis I became interested in checking it out one day. Might be a hit, might be a miss, but I’ll never know unless I try!

Which authors do you feel you need to read?

  1. I recommend the first couple Anne of Green Gables books. I read them growing up and enjoyed them.

I’ve got A Darker Shade of Magic on my TBR list as well.

    • I hope I like Anne of Green Gables as everyone else seems to! If I do, it’ll get added to the list of books I’ll probably push on future children, ha!

  2. I LOVED A Darker Shade of Magic so I definitely recommend that one, but more importantly—YES to Madeleine L’Engle! She’s one of my favorite authors. I love all the books in time series(well, A Wind in the Door is definitely the weakest link, but other than that. . .) A Wrinkle in Time and A Swiftly Tilting Planet are two of my favorite books.

I know one author I feel I should probably read at some point is Tamora Pierce .

    • I haven’t read any Tamora Pierce either, but I still don’t know much about her books yet. She might be someone else I need to look into reading!

  3. I really need to get back to Dennard’s series, but I enjoyed Something Strange and Deadly! The romance was swoony, and the zombie-steampunk thing was pretty unique 🙂

*not saying anything about Schwab* *but Schwab* *pushes the Archived at you*

  4. I’m giving my vote to Anne of Green Gables, I adore that whole series so much. And I haven’t read Garden Spells but I have read book 2 (whose name escapes me!) and I enjoyed it a lot. Victoria Schawb is high on my to-read list too.

  5. Totally recommend Shannon Hale’s The Goose Girl! It’s one of my favourite YA fairy tale retellings 🙂 Also I quite enjoyed Garden Spells – if you like magical realism, an emphasis on characters over plot, and evocative imagery, you’ll probably like it too. And Jane Eyre FTW, it’s one of my favourite classics!

    • I was thinking the other day of how I don’t think I’ve really read any magical realism, unless you count something like Narnia that crosses into fantasy. I’m intrigued by your description though!

  6. Uh oh I haven’t read any of these EXCEPT FOR A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC, which I 1000000% recommend! I do have Something Strange and Deadly waiting on my shelves, and I also very badly I want to read Between Shades of Gray, because it’s centered around WWII 🙂

    • Yes, I do love reading about WWII, always have! I’ve got a couple other books set in that time period that I need to read in addition to Between Shades of Gray.

    • Everybody really does seem to love her! So much pressure! I hope I’m not disappointed when I do finally read ADSoM or another Schwab book!

  7. I loved Between Shades of Gray, and super recommend Neil Gailman. Coraline, Neverwhere, Good Omens, The Ocean at the End of the Lane — if you end up liking his stuff, you’ve got no shortage of reading material! Also, on the subject of North and South — have you seen the miniseries? It’s with Richard Armitage and I think I watched it on Netflix — I LOVED IT and it made me really want to read the book. I’m such a sucker for period romances.

    • I have not seen the miniseries, but seeing stuff about it perked my interest first. I will definitely have to watch it; wouldn’t be surprised if I did before I read the book. I love Jane Austen stuff so I figure this is right up my alley. 🙂

  8. I relate to this list so much. Schwab, Sepetys, Dennard…so many I need to read asap. More like, I needed to read them months ago, if not years. Hopefully you’ll get to read them soon!

  9. yay for Sarah Addison Allen and Madeleine L’Engle o/

I also really want to read Austenland but haven’t yet. I enjoyed the first two Princess Academy books and also The Goose Girl. I’m curious how Hale writes more adult fiction 🙂
