Sci-Fi Month Intro Post!

It’s November, which means it’s Sci-Fi Month, hosted by Rinn Reads! I was very excited when I found out about this event, as the sci-fi genre has been creeping into my life in the form of movies and TV for well over a decade now. It all started with…

star-warsOf course! I thought it was a lot of fun! And then one day I caught a marathon on TV of this show…

The-Twilight-ZoneAnd fell in love with this particular kind of science fiction that examines humanity. Then while dating my husband he introduced me to…

Star-Trek1We watched the original series while dating, and after TRYING to watch the first few episodes of The Next Generation (those first few episodes really are pretty bad), we put the rest of the series on hold until after we married. But now I’ve seen it all and love them all! But in the meantime, we were introduced to…

fireflycastSuch a unique and awesome (but sadly short-lived) series! Then after we finished Star Trek, we watched…

babylon5It’s crazy underrated. I mean seriously, how many TV shows do you know of where the creator/writer of the show had the entire series plotted and planned out beforehand? Amazing story and character arcs in five seasons (or four… the fifth season sadly didn’t live up to the rest of the show in terms of great stories). And currently we’re watching…

Fringe-season2Most of these movies/shows will come up again in my posts this month! And now I’m starting to gain interest in sci-fi books as well, though I think the only true sci-fi book I’ve read so far is Ender’s Game. I liked it pretty well and I’m planning to check out more sci-fi books! But since I will not be reading anything new this month due to NaNoWriMo, I will have no new reviews of sci-fi books to share, and will be focusing exclusively on the movies and TV shows that made me fall in love with the genre over time. Here’s my personal schedule of posts that you can look out for:

November 7: Elements from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine I Want to See in Books

November 11: Ender’s Game movie review

November 18: Memorable Characters of Sci-Fi

November 22: Science Fiction World Building

November 27: My Top 3 Earth-Bound Sci-Fi Movies

If you’re participating in Sci-Fi Month as well, leave a comment and let me know! And if not, I hope you’ll enjoy some of these posts!

What’s your favorite element of science fiction?

  1. Yaaaayy! I can’t wait to see all of the stuff you have planned for this month. I’ve been wondering about Babylon 5, because it seems to have a pretty decent following. Maybe my husband and I will try out that show next. It definitely looks Star Trek-ish, which could either make me love it more, or make me wish it was just Star Trek instead…

My sister and I will be seeing Ender’s Game this weekend, so I’ll be looking forward to your review for that as well. AND — best of luck with NaNoWriMo! 😀

    • I think Babylon 5 is actually better than a lot of Star Trek, and you know how much I love Trek. There are so many details within this larger story arc and virtually everything gets tied up. I just love stuff like that.

And thank you! I’ll need it!

  2. I’m not participating in Sci-Fi month, but I do love some sci-fi! Just not Star Wars, eff that one 😉

I read Ender’s Game recently, it was pretty awesome and now I want to watch the movie..lol So does my husband, so hopefully we get to go see it in theater. If not, I’ll be sad.

    Also, Firefly is awesome! 🙂

  3. Okay so I really need to put Babylon 5 on my to watch list now, it’s everywhere! Firefly is AMAZING and it makes me sad that it didn’t get the love it needed when it aired. Fringe is on my to watch list on Netflix =D

Good luck with NaNoWriMo, and I’m looking forward to your posts!

    • Babylon 5 is seriously amazing. Don’t judge it by its low production costs, just watch for the story! And I agree about the Firefly thing! Fringe is so great too!

      And thank you!

  4. ahhh, but who had the worse pilot? Babylon5, Star trek Next Generation, or Star Trek Deep Space Nine? Most of my posts will be book focused, so I”m so happy to see other bloggers are focusing on games, tv shows, movies, and anime. what a great variety of SF Fandom to explore!

    • I’m really curious what your answer to your question is. Personally I think Encounter at Farpoint is way worse than either The Gathering or the first episode of the Babylon 5 TV show, and I think Emissary was the second best pilot in Trek (I think the first best was Voyager’s).

I’ll definitely have to be on the lookout for your posts since I need to read more sci-fi books!

      • I will also say that The Next Generation was at the greatest disadvantage out of these three in terms of where I was in my sci-fi viewing, and Babylon 5 was at the greatest advantage in terms of becoming a more fully-fledged sci-fi fan, seeing the potential of the story, and trusting the direction it was going. But that being said, I still feel that objectively, I would still rank the pilots from best to worst as: Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5, then TNG.

  5. I’ve never seen any of the original Star Wars movies, I’ve only ever seen an episode or two of The Twilight Zone, and I’ve never seen Babylon 5 at all (though you now have me very interested!). I should probably fix… all of that!

I know what you mean about NaNoWriMo. I probably won’t be reading anything new this month, either! Just a lot of writing. And panicking. And maybe a little more writing. Did I mention panicking? (Good luck!)

All of your posts sound fantastic! I can’t wait to read them!

  6. I think you’ve pretty much covered every show I loved growing up, although I must admit I preferred TNG and Voyager above the original Star Trek. Babylon 5 was utterly amazing; I didn’t miss an episode.

    • Deep Space Nine is actually my favorite of the Treks, and the Original is actually my least favorite, but I still enjoy it and I got into the rest of Trek because of it! And B5 is so amazing!

  7. I’m totally going to watch Firefly now. It sounds great! I’m new to the sci-fi genre, but am still participating, because, you know, sci-fi is awesome. I can’t wait for your sci-fi month posts, Amy!

  8. Loving all the retro sci-fi posters you found! 🙂

I actually still need to check out a bunch of these shows (everything but The Twilight Zone, Star Wars, and Firefly). Er.. I suppose that would be half? Not so much a bunch. Oops. I absolutely adore Firefly & Serenity and would love to watch through them again sometime soon. I probably won’t get to it this month since they’re still pretty fresh in my mind, but maybe early next year!

A long-time friend has been trying to get me to watch Babylon 5 for what feels like a decade. He asks me about my progress every time I talk to him and I still haven’t started on it. I feel so guilty!

For sci-fi books I’m digging further into the collection of Phillip K. Dick stories I have. I think you would probably enjoy him, if you see any of his novels at your library or the bookstore (or even on audiobook).

I won’t be participating too much in Sci-Fi Month, but hopefully I will come up with something other than the Bingo card to contribute. Maybe one of the books I’m reading for the challenge will spark a topic. 🙂

    Good luck with NaNoWriMo!

  9. A fan after my own heart with the love of classic Trek and Doctor Who.

I think my parents are still holding out hope this is a phase I will grow out of…..of course, it’s been thirty years of loving both of those.

And yes, the early seasons of TNG were hard to watch. But I will say that it was just exciting to have new Star Trek on TV when it premiered and there are some hidden gems in season one.

Oh and if you’re weak like I am..do NOT check out the Blu Ray releases of either show. Dear heavens, they look and sound GREAT.

    • I actually got used to TNG by season two, though looking back it was probably not until season 3 that it really came into its own. The only Blu-Ray Star Trek I’ve seen so far is Best of Both Worlds… hope to see more one day!
